Toilet training is a key stage in a toddler’s development and parents are often in a hurry to start the training much before the kid is physically and mentally ready. If you force the child to train prematurely, then it may lead to complications both for the child and the parents. And more time to teach the child.
There is no particular time for all the toddlers of the same age group to start the training. It varies according to their physical, as well as mental growth. However, a careful parent can decide the right time for potty training of their child by looking out for certain signs, that show the child has finally come around to the desired goal.
First of all, the child needs to develop the capacity to understand the signal from his body for a potty, as well as the physical capacity to hold it till he/she reaches the toilet and then remove the desired clothing before squatting. It takes time, and the signals will tell you when the right time has come.
Toddlers gradually learn from experience that a particular body feeling is for a potty or a wee. They might tell you about it before letting go. Look also for times when their nappy remains dry for longer than usual periods, and once it is wet they feel uncomfortable and want you to change it. This means their bladder and bowel muscles are getting stronger and soon they will be able to control these muscles until they are ready go.
Also, start the training when the child is mentally and physically at ease. There are periods when the child is upset or stressed over some new developments such as a new baby or a transfer to a new playschool. Wait for a period when the child is totally relaxed before starting the toilet training.
Toddlers are often reluctant to sit alone on the toilet for a long time till they are finished. Forcing them to sit there against their wish will only create more scenes and complications by prolonging the learning period. Instead, remain with them till they are finished or give them toys or picture books to occupy themselves while they sit at the toilet. If nothing works, then take the child off, and try again after a few days or a week. ‘Slow and steady wins the race,’ remember the wise saying.
