Real experiences by a Mom

Toddlers and Breastfeeding Mothers

Many breastfeeding mothers, at one time or other, experience deficiency in milk production. This puts their kids in quandary forcing them to depend on other sources of nourishment instead of breast milk. But nothing can substitute breast milk, and the health of the kids suffers as a result.

Mothers experience deficiency of milk at different stages after child birth. It can happen soon after child birth and can continue up to several days. Or it can happen 3 or 4 months after child birth. However, this is a temporary phenomenon and the problem can be rectified by proper care and nourishments.

Healthy mothers with sufficient milk production need not undergo any special diet or liquid nourishment such as malt liquor to increase milk supply. Intake of malt liquor, or any other alcoholic drinks, will do more harm than good in the long run. What the breastfeeding mother should really do to maintain health and improve milk production is to eat a wholesome diet, as she had been doing before child birth, and have plenty of fresh air and some exercise.

For best results, the mother need not concentrate on any special food or liquid. She should continue with her normal meals, which should be adequate and nutritious. The diet should contain all types of food including grains, vegetables, fruits and animal foods. When this routine is followed consistently it is sufficient not only to maintain good flow of quality milk but also to revive ample secretion of milk in case of any deficiency.

Unnecessary intake of malt liquor or alcoholic substance is an unwise move. However, a pint of quality ale could be had once a day if it agrees with the mother’s constitution. Regular exercise in open air such as walking, horse exercise, or carriage exercise would do wonders for her health. Besides, a tepid or cold water bath/shower every morning will be very helpful. Add a pinch of salt to the water for a healthy glow. If the shower is impossible, then it could be substituted with sponging of the body with salt water.

There are no short cuts to good health and better milk production. The mother should stick to the above plan and then she will not have to worry much about milk deficiency and the consequent health problems of her toddler.
