Parents need to keep in mind that colleges allow admission to all educated people, irrespective of whether they earned it through home or public schooling. That is, all educated individuals enjoy equal opportunities to study at a college. Many parents discontinue the home schooling and admit their wards in to high schools due to the mistaken belief that a high school diploma is mandatory for getting a college seat.
However, many colleges are unconcerned with a high school diploma. All they want to make sure is whether the candidate is properly educated, whether at home or at a public school. Hence, parents can continue with the home schooling of their kids up to college, if they can afford to do so. The fact that a lot of home schooling children have got admission to reputed colleges such as the Harvard proves this point.
A high school diploma is unnecessary for admission in many such colleges. They look for quality education and conduct of the candidates as admission criteria. Other things being equal, some colleges prefer home school candidates to public school kids because of the variety and value addition that these students bring to the college.
Colleges follow different criteria for admission. Some colleges conduct entrance tests such as the SAT, while others do not conduct any tests at all. They rely on a general equivalency diploma. What ever may be the case, parents can rest assured that a college admission usually does not require special training or high school background, provided the kids are well educated and good mannered.
