Toddler Development of Linguistic Skills

Parents are overwhelmed with joy when they hear the first words coming from the mouth of their hardly one year old child. However, many parents don’t realize that they have an important role to play in the language development of their kid. A new-born baby usually hears the first words from its mother or father, and his/her language development begins from that point. Hearing is the primary method of acquiring a language.

Toddlers normally begin to say their first words when they are about one year old. And the language ability gradually grows to using simple phrases at two years and culminates in the use of full sentences by age three. A child is usually able to grasp basic language skills and speak properly by the age of 5. This normal process of language development is a very important factor in the future development of the kids. It is found that a child who is weak in language skills will become a failure in his/her intellectual and social achievements.

The above set back occurs because learning abilities and academic performance are closely linked to language abilities. Moreover, reading and written language skills also depend on how well a child can speak. All put together, it becomes clear that a child’s progress in life depends on its early child hood language development.

As pointed out in the first stanza, a child starts its language education from day one of his/her birth. The baby begins to learn its first lessons of language class by hearing the words of those who are in close contact with it, especially its parents. Therefore, parents usually become the first language teacher of the child. Proper parental care can help the child to achieve language skill to his/her fullest potential.

It is an established fact that human beings acquire almost all their skills through learning. A child brought up without human contact practically has no skill at all, and behaves as if it were something better than an animal. Like all other skills, language ability is also a learned skill, not an automatic process.
