Kids cry due to various reasons, and some cry without any reason at all. What ever may be the reason, it means the kid needs your attention and you have to do something to stop the crying. Here are some tips that will help you to deal with a crying toddler.
Gently shake the kid from side to side, or in a slow a rocking motion but never do it vigorously. Kids feel very uncomfortable in tight fitting clothes. It restraints their movements and cuts into their skin. If the clothes are too tight, remove them at once. Check the room temperature. Your baby may be feeling too upset either because the room is too hot or too cold. Adjust the temperature accordingly - such as putting on the fan if it is hot or closing the windows if it is cold.
Remove the nappy if it is wet or soiled, and clean and dry the affected body parts. Make a soothing sound with your mouth or sing a lullaby. Also pat and stroke the head or try breast feeding. Give something to eat or drink if the kid can do so. Or give a pacifier or allow thumb sucking. Cover the kid with a warm and soft towel if the weather is chilly.
Walk around the room taking the toddler in your arms, talking gently. Change the kid’s position occasionally to see which position works. If the room is too stuffy, take the child outside, or to another room in the house. Lay her/him on a cradle and try rocking gently. Switch on a music doll. Or give the kid to some one with whom the kid is familiar.
It is difficult for some kids to stop crying even if they are normal. Others may cry due to some physical ailment. But for a majority of the children one of the above tactics or a combination is enough to stop the crying in a short while. Each child has individual preferences. Find out which tactic is best suitable to pacify your kid by trying out all the above methods one by one.
