Teaching Home Schooling Toddlers through Un-schooling

Toddlers could be taught at home through the ‘Un-schooling’ method. The method makes do with any prepared curriculum, target or set pattern. The learning process is carried out in a natural manner through everyday activities. The teacher is guided by the wishes of the kids. Although this method may sound impracticable since it gives too much freedom to the kids, it is really productive if certain guidelines are followed.

The key is to follow the kid’s cue. Ask him what he would like to learn for now. If he is unsure, give him some options. If he expresses an interest in learning about spider, tell him all about it including its organs, species, reproduction, web-weaving, eating habits and so on. Keep to the point and resist the temptation of explaining too much. The kid may be satisfied after a while and then you can choose another topic. The duration of the teaching depends on the child’s satisfaction. You may have to repeat or add more details if he is unsatisfied.

In addition, the kid could be shown pictures or videos of the learning topics for more knowledge. New things could be taught through games and puzzles. Taking the kid for field trips or to the zoo and museums will give him more hands on experience. When out in the fields, point out things and describe their structure, functions and uses.

The learning level of the kid depends on the teacher’s knowledge. Hence, the teacher needs to do enough research to broaden her knowledge. If the teacher is well versed in a lot of topics, she can make use of almost all the opportunities that come around their way.

The success of the program depends on patience, perseverance and encouragement. Some kids may take longer time to learn a particular topic. But, the learning process should be structured in such a way that they get enough time to learn.
