Reasons for painful teething in toddlers

Painful teething in toddlers is often caused by molars, which take time to push through the gum due to their bigger size and bluntness. The molars appear mainly during age two, and the pain is more common during this period. Although painful, there is no evidence that teething causes any illness. However, illness can occur due to some other causes.

The advent of teething could be recognized on the outside when the cheek on that side turns hot and red due to inflammation of the gum. The kids often try to soothe the pain by sucking or biting, but these activities are also painful even during sleeping. The pain often continues even after the soothing activities are stopped. The same thing happens during breast feeding or bottle-feeding.

The best thing for parents to do is to allow the kids suck as long as they want, and then use a cup to give them drinks. Parents need not worry too much about this phase, as it vanishes after a few days with the emergence of each tooth.

Parents can help the kids to get some relief from the pain by giving them something cold and safe to bite. Toddler teeth may be too strong for a gel-filled teething ring, but a cold raw carrot can bee very effective. Its shape also allows the kids to place it in the mouth where it hurts. Frequent finger massaging of the painful parts and use of a teething gel is also very effective. Also, protect your child from exposure to cold winds by keeping them indoors or using suitable hats or head dress that could cover the cheeks.

Teething is not known to cause any illness, even if it is painful. The illness could be caused by some other reasons. An ear-ache can also be confused with teething. If the pain persists consult a doctor for verifying the reasons. The doctor may probably prescribe a sedative.
