More Home Schooling Techniques for Toddlers

There are several methods available for teaching toddlers at home. Among these, The Charlotte Mason method we have discussed before. Let’s now discuss some other popular home schooling techniques followed by parents the world over.

The Montessori Method makes use of children’s ability to concentrate intensely at different times of the day. The method was first originated in Italy, specifically for this purpose. During their intense sensitive periods, children are made to repeat an activity until they have mastered it to their satisfaction. The kids use well planned curriculum materials designed to cater to their learning development as well as satisfy their need for spiritual development. Although the materials are expensive, these make sure that the kids learn through a combination of simple and complex methods. This makes the learning activities fun and productive.

John Holt, an educational activist in Boston, devised a method that puts emphasis on hands-on experience to learning. The onus of the education is placed on the belief that kids learn best when they are taught at their own pace and guided by their interests without using any formal schooling methods. This technique is popularly known as the ‘Un-schooling Method.’ This is the most unstructured method among the home schooling methods. The Parents or tutor instruct the kids without the use of any formal curriculum, materials or schedules. The kids are taught taking cues from them, according to their individual preferences and abilities.

There is another popular home schooling method known as The Eclectic Home Schooling Method. This is a combination of all other home schooling methods. Parents have the option to select the most suitable curriculum, schedule and materials for their kids from all the available methods. The Eclectic method puts emphasis on the parents’ ability to choose the right package for their kids. The basic curriculum is a well planned one, but the parents can make changes according to the kids’ abilities, interests, learning style and temperament. Outdoor activities such as field trips, visits to the libraries, museums and other places of interests are also encouraged.

There are also other methods of home schooling practiced in the US and elsewhere. However, parents need to note that the success of the methods depends on the parent’s ability to inspire the kids to learn, and structure the style and curriculum to make these flexible and tuned to the interests of the kids. This will make the learning productive as well as fun.
